Hey WC anglers I am Dan from PA and I am a teacher and planning for my summer vacation and decided to shore fish California all the way down to Cobo Mexico. I will be new to “West Coast” sea/shore fishing, but I need some good graphical instructions on how to make a line, dimensions and style of rigs that work best on the Left Coast. If you can help I’d sure will appreciate it.

Here is a quick list that will help you out:
1-long rod 9ft. med action spinning
2-20 lb. main line
3-sliding sinker 1-2 0z.slide on main line
4- barrel swivel tied on
5-10lb. leader tied to that about 3 ft.
6-hook of your choice i prefer a size 2
7-Bait from local bait shop crab, minnow, worm, etc.
8- set rig in rod holders
Have a seat in your portable chair with a cold one and fish.- Have fun wish I was you.
This is a good rig for Sea Trout, Red Fish, etc. also works well on rivers,
or you can also cast spoons and crank baits far out in the surf. this is more expensive and harder work.
Just keep it simple and use the basics and you’ll catch fish. I’d go with a 20 plus line, a 4-6 aught hook, tie a runner line about 6 inches and then a 3-4 ounce weight to the bottom of the line. Then go up your line about a foot and not a loop on the line and then from that loop tie on your runner line. Then with the line tied like that it will allow your weight to fix itself at the bottom and allow your bait to float around as the surf moves. It is better to do this…(cheep way)….than go out and spend a pile of money on lures and rigs and find out that you may or may not like this type of fishing. man i hope that you really do enjoy it. fishing for some is more than a sport it is a way of life and i hope you pick it up and run with it. enjoy your fishing trip. good luck good fishing be safe and remember to share the experience.
Good luck
