Quick question about purchasing a Shakespeare fishing reel. Looking at the description and it raises a few questions:
it mentions it comes with a clip on to to reel spool, what is this and what is it’s function? Also, what would you rate Shakespeare a good brand for fishing gear..? Finally, I have been fishing for just over a month now and in that time I have caught 2 yes count them 2 fish!!!
1 11lb carp and a half pound perch
any tips
Thank you Danny in PA

Shakespeare are great starter reels because if you mess them up you’re not out a lot of money. Now, depending on the model, the line clip is a simple metal/plastic, hook that you slip your line under when your not fishing to stop it uncoiling from the spool, most spinning reels have them. Depending on your budget I would seriously look into shimano reel, although they may cost more they will last you allot longer and they have a better action for playing a good fish.
Shakespeare reels are decent as BassHole mentioned, but there are many choices at a lower prices. The least expensive Shimano reel is probably the IX series. They came in various sizes and they can handle many freshwater and saltwater species. A IX2000 or IX4000 only costs $9.95 at Wal-Mart. The reel is quiet and fairly smooth (very smooth for the price). The drag on those reels will be much better than many reels that cost around 3 times as much (including some Abu Garcia models). It is not the best reel in the world but it definitely is one of the best deals out there. If you remember to loose the drag after each use, the reel will serve you very nicely for a long time.
Also, Shakespeare’s makes acceptable fishing products but their quality control isn’t that great. Go find a rack full of Ugly Stik combos. Work their reels. I’m pretty sure you’ll find at least one reel that isn’t as smooth. Grab the rod tip and bend those rods. You’ll find almost every rod will bend at different lengths and many rods even have slightly different stiffness. All of them are acceptable as is but not all of them are as good as “they” claimed to be.
good luck have fun hope this helped.
Well, I got to say that Shakespeare is a OK reel its not top quality but its not terrible. For beginners I would stay away pfluger reels, there probably one of the worst they brake a lot and really fragile. it your looking for a top quality reel go with shimano or if you want something cheap but reliable go with zebco they least a long time.As with so many things in life you get what you pay for. I would recommend at a minum reels in the $60-$100 range. Shimano or Dawia are my recommendations. Fishing now over 30 years, I have seen failure of cheap equipment time after time and the loss of large fish. Usually it is the drag the will cease or even come apart on a cheap real with a large fishing yanking on it.
For a baitcaster I would recommend a shimano Corvalus($60-$70)…., or a calcutta if you want to drop a lot of coin
For a spinning real, a shimano symetre ($60-70), ….or a sshimano tradic or sustain if you want to spend
