Your best catfish bait? I will be relocating to Eest Texas (Tyler) soon and I like to fish at night and was wondering what bait I should use or if here is a preferred bait for that area. I fish all kinds of cats and like yellow cats the best and I’ll be shore fishing and NOT trot-lining. Also, any Texas cat fishermen here want to clue me in on fishing at night?

I’ve gone out fishing a few times this summer with guides and used their equipment. However, I recently went to a local bait shop and purchased a slightly used rod and reel, many different variety of hooks, round container of split shot weights, and some bobbers.
I headed out last night and hit the (55 acre) lake a 7:30-11:00 or at night. I caught a lot of bluegill, sunfish, and yellow perch. There are the occasional catfish when I drag along the bottom, and some small and large mouth bass.
I’ve been fishing with live bait ie., crickets and worms but I am now starting a tackle box with some artificial lures. Could any of you anglers shoot me some ideas on what types of baits and lures to fill my tackle box with? If you could give me some links to places online where I can buy them it would be great too.

This angler hooked a giant Tennessee River catfish — including a 40-pounder. Great video to watch with Sunday morning coffee!

Hey all thought I’d check in and ask a good method for shore fishing catfish and possibly a dock? I normally fish for catfish off a boat and now I’ll be heading out doing some camping and needed to know what gear/method/rig would best work fishing from the shore.
Thanks all, Jackie

Hello CupidFish. Thought I’d join and ask a question form the resident catfishing anglers on this forum. I am primarily a trout angler, but never for fished catfish. It’s just too hot for trout right now and the local lake here has been stocked here many times, but as mentioned I know little about catfishing. So her is my scenario, it’s pushing almost 100 degrees here today and the lake closes at 9pm. Do catfish bite in these conditions and can anyone give me tips on bait or technique? Thanks!

How about funny fishing stories? I’ll start a post and you can add yours. Three years ago my bosses took me and my co-workers catfishing on the river with his new fishing boat. The interesting part is my boss did not know, I have fished that river most of my life and grew up yards from where we launched..Anyway, we tied up on the downstream side of a log jam and he began the routine of show and tell on how to rig and bait up. When he went to cast his new rod/reel, it flipped out of his hands and into the current. I couldn’t help myself but to ask, “How do you know when you get a bite”?
He gave me the worse look known to man and my co-workers struggled not to laugh.

I’ve just been too busy at work during the day to get out fishing so I am going head out for some night catfishing. I was thinking about fishing using a slip bobber but I will not be able to see it at night. Due to not having a lantern or anything like that and not going to hold a flashlight, I was thinking clipping a glow stick on my line. Anyone done this before? Suggestions and advice welcome..

Hello all another Newbie to the blog and needed some catfishing rod regarding the Berkley Cherrywood graphite fishing. My idea is can it be used for channel catfishing? The size of the rod is 6′6″ medium casting. My current catfishing rod is too stiff and has no sensitivity and I’ve lost many fish because of this. My idea is to use is cherrywood because of it would be easier to feel bites.
Finally, the rod is a casting rod and could I use a good sized spincasting reel for it?
Thanks for any advice you could cast my way- Will in AL

I need some advice on catfish spike injury care. I was out catfishing on the river and was barefoot and I stepped on a catfish and the spike stuck in my foot. Not only did I step on the spike it is stuck in my foot when I yank the fish out. I was wondering how long does it take to heal and how to go about treating it? I can’t even move my foot and had to call in sick today…;-(

I’ve been scouting a lot of new areas to fish and came upon a great spot and seen some nice size catfish there. The problem is there are many weeds, but big cats. So my question is, does catfish dough bait still work good off bobbers? People keep telling me use minnows and dough bait off a bobber, but catfish are bottom feeders, but ill catfish come up and take it? If you know any other good catfish baits please tell me. thanks. – Bill in Ms
