Columbia River Fishing Trips

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

Columbia river fishing trips offer the seasoned as well as the experienced angler the very best fishing experiences they can get any where in the fishing world. There is something to lading a fierce wrestling Steelhead or reeling in that sixty pound Sturgeon that measures close to five feet long. The sheer delight of landing the American Shad is just out of this world, and you can get all this and more on your Columbia river fishing expedition.

The rivers of Columbia are untouched by humans and twist and curve through twelve hundred miles from America’s Pacific Northwest and wind their way through the country to flow into the Pacific Ocean, the Columbia River been featured in many documentaries and Hollywood productions through the ages. Such is the attraction of this river that thousands of anglers visit the river every month to try their luck at luring and hooking the giant fish the river is home to.

The force of the river has got it the nick name ‘The Mighty Columbia’. This river has been carved by glaciers that melted over ten thousand years ago and is believed to be the forth largest river in North America. It was only in 1872 that the river was named the Columbia after a fur trader’s ship that sailed the river. Since the river was renamed it has attracted millions of anglers from various countries of the world. The river is home to vast populations of the mighty Sturgeon and Salmon, but sporting fishermen also come in search of the other species of fish that inhabit the mighty Columbia.

The fishing season officially begins from Memorial Day and continues through the month of June. This is the time of the year the American Shad, known as the ‘poor mans Salmon’ are on the run – or running as it is known. The Shad is believed to be on of the world’s best gaming fish. This is because it is one of the fish that can put up quite a fight when the angler tries to land it after hooking it. Anglers can hook and land as many as forty Shad in a single day from the Columbia river.

The best bait to lure the Sturgeon fish include; sand shrimp, smelt and anchovies. The Shad has acquired a reputation of being the most difficult fish to land. It is capable of putting up quite a fight when it is hooked, and most of the time it manages to get away even if it means tearing its mouth where the hook is lodged. The Sturgeon can weigh in at as much as 800 pounds and measure over 5 feet long. It is no wonder that the anger had best be strapped to his seat when reeling this giant. You will have a better chance of hooking your Sturgeon trophy if you plan a fishing trip from May through June any year.

River Fishing For Catfish – Lore Surrounding Catfish and the Rivers of the American South

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
Daniel Eggertsen asked:

Of all of the places one might go in search of a big catfish, rivers seem to be the waterways that come to mind, when we think of these big, whiskered lunkers, probably because of the huge amount of lore surrounding catfish and the rivers of the American South. But then, the lore is there for a reason – the biggest cats in the world generally live in rivers, and in the case of North America, the rivers in which cats can be found are plentiful, with river-dwelling cats found in most areas of North America, except for the extreme North. The only thing that changes, is the size and species of cats that live there. Depending on the locale in which you are fishing, the species you find might be Channel Cats, Blue Cats or Flatheads. Blues and Channel Cats are fairly similar in habits, but Flatties have their own way about them, in certain respects.

Virtually all cats prefer darker conditions, and so, tend to move toward deeper water, with lots of structure or relief on the bottom. Because of their penchant for low-light conditions, nightfall is far and away the best time to pursue them. River fishing for cats adds a consideration in the form of the current, which can be your friend or foe, depending on how you approach things.

Generally, cats like a solid current flow, making rivers an optimum choice for catfishing. So, working with the current is the best bet. Since the current will tend to push a light bait up, as the line tugs at it, if you’re casting a line, you’ll need to choose a heavy, sinking bait, or use a sufficient sinker weight to get the bait down to the fish. Alternatively, jug fishing rigs or trotlines are effective at covering lots of water, and keeping baits in the action zone.

Trotlines are a line which is stretched across a span of the waterway, and secured on both ends. Along this line are spaced a number of “drops” (20 – 70 or more), which are lengths of fishing line secured to the main trotline, with a hook (often two) baited along their length. A heavy trotline will keep the centre drops down deep in the channel, and will follow the bottom progressively up as it moves towards shore at its ends, keeping all the drops near the bottom, and the fish.

Jugfishing uses a number of individual floats (jugs), each with a baited drop suspended beneath it. Drops of differing lengths can be used on several jugs, to cover a great deal of water, at every possible depth, and can have different baits deployed, too.

If you are fishing with a rod and reel, make sure your gear is strong and appropriate to the size and strength of the very powerful fish you are after. Fishing from shore, a sliding ledger, or slipweight, is a top choice for weighting a bait, without creating a stop between the bait and the rod end.

Commonly Used Fishing Equipment in the UK

Saturday, June 20th, 2009
Keenstackle Fishing asked:

Fishing in the UK is a sport that’s both relaxing and exciting. The relaxing part is casting a baited hook into the water and waiting for an unsuspecting fish to happen by. The exciting part is when the fish takes the bait. Here’s some information about two types of Fishing Equipment required for this enjoyable sport.

When you are starting out as a fisherman in the UK, it is best to start with the most simplistic form of Fishing Equipment. It really doesn’t require a lot of fishing gear to go fishing. However, a rod or pole is indeed a necessary piece of equipment. The fishing pole is used to suspend the line from which hangs the bait for the fish. Bamboo, fiberglass and carbon fiber are all basic materials used to make the poles. The fishing rod is used for the same purpose but is somewhat more sophisticated. They have various lengths and also vary in action. The sizes are available from a 24-inch rod to 20 foot one. The casting is better with the longer rod.

There are many different types of fishing rods. A carbon fiber pole is a more technologically advanced pole, which is usually used for coarse fishing in Europe. Fly fishing rods are made to cast artificial flies. They are part of the Fishing Equipment used to catch salmon in the UK. Many fishermen in the UK use this salmon fishing equipment each year for a successful catch. Normally salmon is fished from the rivers in England, although it can be done well in the sea also. In addition to the right rod, you will need waders for the majority of UK Rivers in order to get to the best fishing places.

When you are searching for sea fishing equipment in the UK, try to find sea rods made to be used on the open sea. These rods will be built stronger and longer than the other kinds. For sharks and other huge game, specialty rods are designed. Be sure that the deep-sea fishing rod that you have selected can hold up to the pressure of the resistant larger fish when they are hooked. Also be certain that it is constructed from material such as fiberglass or graphite, which will resist corrosion from the salt air.

Every other part of your tackle has to be able to fit with your rod. This includes the lines, lures, reels and hooks. If you aren’t sure about your choices, get advice from a more experienced fisherman. You need to bear in mind that no matter what kind of fish you are trying to catch in the UK, you have to have the right fishing equipment to be successful.
