GEORGA

There are some great stocked lakes in Georgia lakes with some very  large catfish, bass, croppie, bluegill, and other types of smaller game fish. What would any Georgian anglers suggest on gear set up and bait to catchfish? Yes, another beginner question.

Your best way to hook live bait?

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009
I always fish  lakes  and have been using shad and minnows on my hooks as bait. In your opinion, what’s the best way to hook a shad or minnow? I was taught to stick the whole fish in the hook from mouth to tail with the hook still being covered. This kills the fish fast and I don’t want that. How have most of you hooked live bait and what do you think works best? I’ve been using # 2 and 5 hooks, with a leader and weight on the end. I believe the hooks might be too big(?) but in the end I’m just a beginner and don’t really know.  please advise.Erick

The most unusual fish you caught

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009
Here’s a question (I Think) not asked yet. What is the most unusual fish you caught while fishing for another species? And what bait/gear/tackle were you using? Mine was trolling in a Lake  for trout 50 feet deep over a 300+foot bottom ,using downriggers, a gold spoon , and trolling about 3 mph , I caught believe it or not, two carp! Two brown German Carp at that..

Fishing bait on a large lake?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009
The  fish I am going for are rainbow trout, brookies, tiger trout, catfish, crappie, and large mouth bass. Please do not  say live bait, I can’t get the worm to stay on the hook, so I mainly use lures. Also, would like to no where on the lake I should fish (on-shore) because all the good places, like the inlet streame are off-limits according to the law. These fish are not going to be big and mostly stocked. The only non-stock fish are catfish, and the perch beds that they are located at are to close to the inlet stream so I can’t fish there eather.

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009
I would like to get into fishing with downriggers on Lake Michigan, but have never used downriggers. Can someone point me to a website, or directions on how to hook them to the fishing line? Also, what sorts of lures would be good choices? I am very interested in learning type of fishing. A bit excited to!

Food fish, game fish, or bait fish?

Thursday, July 30th, 2009
Lake fish or lake fishing have many categories that are divided into three general groups: food fish, game fish and bait or forage fish. These three classifications of lake fishing obviously are already very popular and established. The kinds of fish that belong to food fish are suckers, carps, yellow perch, some species of catfish and more. In the game fish group, the species included were trout, pickerel, pike perch, pickerel, pike, bass, etc. The description of proper technique for casting in lake fishing is hard to express by merely using words alone. It’s always best (if new to lake fishing) just to go to the lake and  observe a local if possible. Though the techniques of casting are hard to describe, the amateur angler will still have fun. Remember, fishing of any kind is still better then the office. Here are some techniques that anglers could take note.

a. Research or study on the habitats of fish and the fish species living in lakes such as mouth black bass and sunfish. These fish species go into hiding in stumps logs, or in water plants.

b. It is necessary for anglers to know how to execute an even, snappy stroke similar to other kinds of fishing. Yet, it should not be as brusque as snapping a whip. This kind of stroke can lead to loss of several flies.

c. In executing both forward cast and backcast, right timing should be taken into consideration.

d. In casting, the anglers should remember that it is not the fly which is cast but the line. The fly is connected to the leader, more like a passenger.

e. In fishing, it is better to use huge, strong rods, especially when the angler had caught a big fish. An example of a big fish that dwells in lakes is the bass which can weigh up to 12 pounds. Bass grow well in ponds or in lakes since they can get abundant food from lakes and ponds. In order to handle to handle larger fish, it is ideal to choose a rod with a length of 8.5 feet and a weight of 4 to 4.75 of an ounce.
