A GOOD LURE FOR STRIPED BaSS?

Sunday, March 14th, 2010
This whole week I have off from my job so I am going fishing with my father. I live in Long Island and we’ll be fishing along the coast on Long Island sound, possible less than a 1/4-1/2 mile off-shore and trolling. Here is a little info about long island sound, it’s not too clear of water, more of a green mercy color, and there can be a lot of seaweed, and not too rocky but there are areas with great rock structures. As mentioned, we want to go trolling for striped bass and we do not own a down rigger and don’t want to pay $300 just to buy one. What are some rigs/lures that we can use hooking it up to a conventional ocean fishing rod. Were on a 19ft power boat so this is not a jon boat or small aluminum hull were trolling with. Like i said what are some good “inexpensive” lured jigs rigs what ever that will troll nicely at slow speed and attract striped bass.
Any information you can cast my way would sure help. Thanks
Tony

Sand bass fishing fun

Saturday, March 13th, 2010
My father and I when I was younger used to buy these HUGE lures that could catch sand bass with them and the bass were (striped) were monstrous. I remember a few times we would see them dead on the lakes we’d visit. These 3ft+ long fat fish. And my father would get a nice smile. We’d go to Lake Texoma a bunch when I was younger. And I think Lake Louisville too.  Everyone always talked about the crazy fights they’d put up, and how fun it was to fish for them. I remember, because my father wouldn’t stop talking about them.

Now my Father lives on the coast and when I asked him about how often he tried, he really didn’t go into detail as to why he did it, and then why he stopped suddenly. I was just curious as to why I don’t see much about them here? Or hear about people fishing for them?

Anyway, any thoughts on these. Any info about them… Maybe one day I’ll buy another john boat and take care of it so I can fish out in deeper waters again!

Sorry, I just read some blog posts here and it took me back a bit.

Winter Striper fishing lures & baits?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Morning CF members! My question is I  fish the river directly below a dam on South Carolina border and they say its the best spot near the lake for striper, even better than on the lake, but I am NOT having any luck in the winter for them. Suggestions on what lures/baits should I use and what weather/time of day is the best during This month and February?

Striped bass saltwater fishing lures?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009
Hello all I am new to CupidFish and thought I’d dive in and ask a question about my favorite type of fishing. I like to fish from the shore for stripers and had a question because I am going to go a bit off-shore after Christmas with my son. I am in the SE and wanted to know what saltwater fishing lures work best for fishing blue fish, stripe bass, and those little tuna fishing off the beach, jettis, or in this case boats.

“LIVE LINE” Striped Bass?

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009
I can’t figure it out. I am going to do a little fishing this  weekend with friends.  I’ve Googled a bit of research and found that the Chesapeake Bay, the big thing for Striped Bass is live lining? My question is, how to do this and what is the best bait? Sorry for the picture, but I did not have one relevant.

catching stripers with lures or bait?

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009
I asked this question a couple times on this blog  and got some great answers (thanks), but still have a few more questions. I’ll be  fishing for saltwater stripers in the three to 10lb range. A few cupidfish members suggested anchovies. Are these the ones you can buy at the grocery store to put on pizza, or do you need to get them at the bait store? Also, no one mentioned bucktails, eels, or peeler crab, do these things still work? I appreciate all your input.
Thanks, Jeff

Fishing for Blues and cooking suggestions.

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009
Has anybody ever eaten Bluefish? How about Striped Bass? I am going fishing as usual this fall, but I usually try and go for Fluke, or Flounder because they taste great. I was wondering if Blues, or Stripers are good to eat? I understand all fish taste okay friend, but need an honest opinion. Bottom fish seam to be my favorite. Also, how do you suggest cooking them?

My Fall Striper Fishing checklist:

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Warm clothing in layers in order to keep your body insulated against the unexpected fall bitter winds and cold temperatures on the open water. Bring along an extra jacket, sweatshirt or windbreaker in case the cold weather discourages you from getting the most out of your fishing experience.

Bring warm drinks A carafe, thermos or cooler to bring extra warmth when needed. Sandwiches wrapped in paper or waxed paper make a great meal on the go and keep your hands clean with the wrappings. Cookies, bananas, crackers and other snacks will also make your long fishing trip a little boost  plus give you more energy for warmth.

Never forget gloves, a hat, scarf and tissues unless you use your sleeve like me. Live eels and squid are prime fishing bait for stripers, so be sure to bring enough to last the duration of your trip. Or try frozen mackerel or other chunk bait if you can’t get live bait or squid.

A Large net can save your skin from the rocks or losing a fish

When baiting the hooks for stripers, hook the live eels through the jaw. There is no need to attach a sinker to your line, as the eels will swim to the ocean’s floor as they plunge below. Eels of about 20 inches in length would be a great way to get the bigger sized stripers you want to catch!

After the eel has swam to the bottom, keep the reel in free spool so that the striper can take the line and gulp down the entire eel. When you feel the first “bump”, count to four then set the hook.

Additional Tips for Striper Fishing:

Chum to attract the fish. (If legal in your area)

Release fish that are illegal or leave a few for the kids.

Always replace bait if much time goes by without any action.

Fall Striper fishing can be especially exciting if all the proper conditions are met. If you follow the above checklists and add your own special extras your trip will be fun and relaxing. Remember, fishing is hit or miss no matter how good your bait is, no matter how great the weather is, and no matter how much you had to spend for your equipment. Just being on the shore/water is what it’s about, stay alert – You never know when big strike/fish will happen. We are getting close and falls around the corner!

Striped bass fishing from shore

Sunday, August 30th, 2009
Many people fish from shore with a balance beam system here in Sacramento. What are your recommendations  about balancing your pole to catch strippers. Many times I’ve tried, but I have not seen my fish numbers improve. Is there a place to buy these rod holders? Thanks in advance for all your help.
