The basics in fishing gear

Your fishing women

Hello all! I am new to the site and just got into fishing last summer. A friend of mine who owns a boat has asked me many times to come fishing with him. I’ve gone out on day boats in the past but they always supplied the gear. My problem is I have not a clue on what to buy and I am on a tight budget. There is a bait shop near by that has a large variety of used fishing gear, but as mentioned I have no idea what to buy. I will be Fishing for grouper, bass, and rock fish here of the coast of central Florida. What type of rod would be best and what type of reel? And is there anything else  you would suggest?

A good Minnow trap

minnow traps
Hello all! I thought I’d post a question regarding simple fishing gear. I am just your average fisherman and for bait, I use your run of the mill powerbaits, salmon eggs, and worms, you can buy at any local bait shop. I have been hooking up a lot of trout and largemouth bass with store bought minnows and now only want to use live bait when fishing. After searching the net I see many “minnow traps” that are just some sort of plastic bottle contraption. I posted the picture above and I was wondering if anyone here uses this trap or would suggest one or a direction to go?

Newbies first fly fishing rod?

fly fishing
Hello all thought I’dpost about being  an absolute newbie at fly fishing. I am still struggling a bit with casting and landing a trout but I am hooked on fly fishing. Now it’s time to buy my own equipment although I have only been on two fly fishing trips with others and now I think I am ready to venture out alone. I am looking to buy a nice, mid-priced, decent rod. Do any fly anglers on this site want to point me in the right direction or a good suggestion? I have been told by many, that fly fishing kits are more problems then good?
thanks for any help!!!!!

North American Fishing Club?

Friday, August 13th, 2010
Hello all I have a question for the members of this blog regarding the North American Fishing Club? Has anyone joined or is a current member? Their promotion is only a  only $1 per month, the free gifts and other offers that all sound good, but  the catch is you must pay for a 3 year membership to get them. They offer a refund if not satisfied, but that would be a pain to go through.

My question, is the magazines worth a 3 year price subscription? Is/does the gifts have some value or is it that cheap crap from china? Their information says for 3 years of membership ($36.00), you get the magazines and also “free” 8 piece fillet knife set, wing-it bobbers and hooks. In addition, “product testing privileges”, “giveaway opportunities”, and a “fishing resource directory”.

Sounds good to me..is there a catch?…your thoughts.

Should I focus on fishing one type?

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

fishing equipmentTime to chip in and ask a question? Should I just focus on fishing one type of fish? Because my fishing techniques and equipment is so scattered. I mean, after you spend the money on fishing equipment for catfish, carp, panfish, and bass my wallet is hurting. I like to fish for them all and depending on the season your choices will get narrow, but I think it’s time to take it down to  one species and target it more frequently? I have to do something. I guess and can still go about with fishing for those but bass, catfish, carp, and panfish all need separate gear.  Now if  I just focus on bass fishing alone I would still just have a little over a dozen or so reels/rods. I could sale some of my other fishing supplies/equipment and could earn profit.

Just wanted to see what you anglers out their think I should do? David

Lures that have never seen water?

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

lots of fishing-lures Do you have a lot of  fishing lures that have never seen water? I was cleaning my gear and just could not believe how many lures I have that are new and never been out of the house or on the water. After counting them all it was 53 and here I am getting on my kids for wasting money on video games that just sit in a box and not used. So how many lures/gear do you have that has never been used?

How to find rare fishing lures

rare fishing lures
Afternoon all. I thought I’d post here because I have read some great answers by some good folks to very difficult questions.  I am always on the lookout for rare fishing lures and have built up a good collection over the years trading with friends and family. Currently, I am looking for a lure, it is made by lucky craft, it is small, they come it different sizes/colors, the larger ones are about an inch long, and small one is 3/4 inch. They are a gundrop shape, the package says they are sammy specials, they are used for drift fishing for steelhead. I am almost certain they’re made out of balsa wood.
Can anyone help me find some….Jesse in Oregon

When to change lures

Friday, July 2nd, 2010
When to change luresWhen to change lures when the first lure is not working? Lets say, I’m fishing, with no-one else around to ask what’s working. I am using a white spinner but nothing is happening after a good 30-40 casts. So how long is long enough before trying another lure like a Rattle-Trap or rubber worm, instead? I’ve always just used live bait and done very little lure fishing, but now I am interested in trying it, now. I’m fishing for bass but wonder if I have much chance for success without more experience and knowledge of how to **really** use them the best way to attract the fish?
