Gearing up with the right stuff
Tuesday, September 14th, 2010Hello, I have a quick question about fishing? I have been somewhat of a casual angler for a little better part of a decade. For years, I used what was cheap at Wal-Mart and hit the pond for an hour or so. This year it all changed, I started using crankbaits, and hitting the water daily, and this spring, summer, fishing season I turned into a serious fisherman. What is holding me back is my serious knowledge of fishing gear, knots, and baits, I got a good handle and know where the right locations are and this summer I caught a lot of fish. So now I want to buy a very nice rod/reel setup. Any anglers here at Cupidfish give me some suggestions on nice reel and decent rod? I am a freshwater fisherman and fish rivers on a boat, lakes, and ponds. Aany suggestions would be great, thank you- Dean in WV
Toledo Bend TX Lake fishing?
Saturday, September 4th, 2010Hey all hope you all are having a nice holiday weekend. I’m stuck at work here in Tyler Tx and have this coming week off. I just got a call from my uncle who wants me to come down and check out his new cabin he bought on Toledo bend lake (Texas side) a few months ago. I am planning on heading down there on Tuesday to get some fishing done. My Uncle is is new to the area (not much a fisherman) and says he doesn’t know what to fish for this time of year. Advice suggestion?

Saltwater fishing first timer
Monday, May 17th, 2010Hey all! Thought I’d join and jump right in on a fishing saltwater question. I am more of a hunter, but from time to time I like to try the water and in the mood to fish and stock the freezer. I from South Texas (Corpus Christi) and going to give saltwater fishing a go and I’ve heard that dead shrimp or a cut bait is the best bait for a beginner to fish. A co-worker of mine gave me some DOA Shrimp Lures a while back and now I want to try them for fun along with my usual bait. I never have used any type of lures, just have seen people use them. So I have a few beginner questions. One: Do I need a particular leader? How do I go about with the getting them on my line? Two: How about weights, Ive noticed there is a small one inside the lure my usually 6-8oz weights are to heavy right? I did find some 3/8oz size 7 sinkers in my dads old tackle, are they any use? Three: Any tips on casting and reeling?I have read using lures is difficult should I even bother trying?- Thanks in Advance Don
Why cry about catch and release fishing?
Saturday, May 15th, 2010Hey all this is a hot issue on most forums so I thought I’d bring it to this blog. The money we spend on buying licenses makes it possible for the fish and wildlife commission to stock species such as trout and salmon into our rivers lakes and streams. Due to mankind encroachment into their natural spawning grounds they would not be able to exist with out sportfishermans money. So why do bleeding hearts find a more noble and important cause than trying to save a fish from getting a hook in the mouth. Would the fish defend you if I snagged a hook in your mouth? – Just venting – Dale
Your favorite rod and reel setup
Sunday, May 2nd, 2010
Over the years I have bought, collected, acquired, inherited a very large variety of rods and reels, but like any “good” angler fisherman, I’m always on the look out for next addition to my collection. I’m just wondering what reels the fishing men and women prefer the most and why? My favorite so far is a fish spinning setups, but I have a number of both baitcasters and spinning reels. Now I like to fish for crappie and know where the crappie are, but the trick is to catch them. I am fishing a river, only about 50 feet wide, but very deep (20 feet in the channel) with steep banks. There are dozens of fallen trees, perfect cover for the crappie. Everything we learned about fishing for them in the lake is no longer valid. Basically, you have to anchor the boat at the end of a fallen tree, and use a long rod to drop bait in between the branches. (Lots of lost jigs).
Anyway, what is your favorite Rod/reel and what will you be fishing for?

Need the basics for ice fishing?
Thursday, October 29th, 2009You could not get more avid of a fisherman then me in the spring and summer. But when it comes to ice-fishing I’m a beginner. I don’t want to sit around all winter so I want to try my hand at ice-fishing, but I don’t know where to start. Can some one suggest books, sites, vids, techniques, ETC. I first want to know what I will be getting in to!

I understand why men like to fish a lot.
Sunday, August 23rd, 2009I’ve finally realized why men are so attracted to fishing: it works like their way of dating, but the only string attached is the one on their fishing pole. I mean, think about it—a guy decides he needs a girl, whether it’s for a relationship or for a one night stand is irrelevant. Either way, he takes his fishing pole, sharpens the hook to make sure that once the fish is caught it’s caught for good, finds his most appealing bait and artfully attaches it to the end of his pole before descending the baited hook into the waters of Lake Women and then, knowing in full what is about to happen, he kicks back without a care in the world and he waits. Maybe it’s because her boyfriend just broke up with her, maybe it’s because she also is looking for a one night stand, but most likely it’s because she fell in love with that cuddly, loving, promising bait. But sure enough, eventually, along will come a girl who sinks her teeth deep into his lure, only to be swept away and hurled from the lake and in a matter of seconds before finding herself flopping around on the deck, gasping for air in this scary new place, a fish out of water. The fisherman is now completely in control, as she can’t swim in air or speak without bubbles. He’s allowed to do whatever he wants, and the worst part of it all is that deep down, the girl could see it coming, but she let it happen anyway. Love does strange things to a person’s judgment. And when it’s over, once the fisherman has had his fill, he’ll throw her back in the water and move on to his next victim. But the girl, on the other hand, has a scar too deep to fix with just football, videogames and beer. She fell in love and got swept away only to be ripped in half and released back to the very spot where she began. Is it because they don’t have a conscience? Is it just the combination of the chemical makeup of the male brain and their raging testosterone levels? Perhaps we will never understand why a guy will be able to say. ‘I love you’ and be totally indifferent to the fact that his words are a lie, while a girl will believe every last cubic lip of it and then will be so irrevocably heartbroken when she finally lets herself in on the not-so-secret that nothing he said was true. Sometimes we cry so hard from bleeding, so sick and tired of going through the needless motions, when all a girl ever really wants is that guy who tells her (and means it), “I know there are plenty of fish in the sea, but baby girl, you’re the only one for me.”

What is a graphite rating For a fishing pole?
Friday, August 14th, 2009I’m looking to buy the best fishing pole I can get for sensitivity. A friend told me to buy graphite but I’m confused on rating in relationship to the pole? Is a higher rating better should I buy a one piece pole or a two piece? I’m looking for the most sensitive pole I can get I’m a crappie fisherman so I’ll be using a light action pole. Looking for the best advice possible.
