Beginners rod & reel combo advice needed. I joined cupidfish to meet women and not so much of a fisherman. So I am thinking about going fishing this summer and need a rod and reel “new guy” combo suggestion. I will be fishing from the coast/bank of a lake or a boat. In short, an all-around- rod/reel if possible? Price should not be the main indicator, rather ease of use.
Thanks!!
Paul

My Father is crazy about fishing as much as I am, but him being retired and all his money must be well spent. He owns only 2 rods and reels, which he uses for carp, suckers and catfish. Both reel/rods are old, one being the Zebco 33 combo, and the other a Johnson Century combo. I have talked with him about getting him a good rod/reel because, he has always been there for me. I just needed some suggestions on what to get and here are some details.
1.) Spincasters. He likes spinning reels, and dreadfully hates baitcasters, as a joke he said he would buy out every baitcasting company and burn all their reels! LMAO … He said he would want a spincaster, also I’m about 90% in on getting a spincasting outfit, and the other 10 on a spinning combo.
2.) He doesn’t like a long rod. 6′ is big enough, as he puts it. Easy to carry, and transport. If 6′6 is available it will be alright also.
3.) He fishes for carp, catfish and suckers as said.
4.) The combo should cost less than 45 bucks, and can be bought from Wal-Mart.
5.) And his favorite brands are Zebco, Johnson and Abu Garcia.
My father swears by the old 33’s, and says that the new ones are not nearly as good … You think the Platinum series 33 would be any better than the Authentic one?
Thanks to all.
Val

I am not an avid angler, but do enjoy fishing for bass, pike, and walleye. I just found out that my reel only holds 6 lb. test line and I can’t catch the size of fish that I would like to with 6 lb. test line and I would like to get a new reel. What would you recommend or should I consider before buying a new reel? Also I would like to have a spinning reel.
Thanks,
Jim in AL.

I was just wondering how do you use the drag adjustment knob/drag on my fishing reel? It frustrates me because if you make it to tight, it wont cast out far. I know stupid newbie question, but hey you got to start somewhere.
Thank you.

My 11 year old son watches too many fishing shows. He already has his Christmas wish list so now I must start doing a bit of research. I need to buy a rod/reel combo, but when looking to buy a rod and everything is complicated for me it makes me crazy. So, if I wanted to freshwater fish, off a bank or boat, possibly catching catfish, bass, and anything smaller, what rod/reel should I buy as far the specs? 4foot? 5foot? 6foot? What type of line? 2-4lbs? 4-8lbs or something like that? I already know I’ll get a spinning real. What’s the number one brand of fishing gear? Plus I don’t have a clue on how to set up the rod, hooks, bobber, ETC. Is there a quick guide/youtube video that one of you’ll can point me too?
Much thanks in advance,
Christina

I understand it is a feature found on some bait casting reels, but I do not have a clue what it means or the use. Newbie Alert!
