My first fly rod?
Monday, June 14th, 2010
My first fly rod? I am an avid bass fishing angler that wants to expand into fly fishing. I’ve already taken an afternoon course in casting in the parking lot of Bass Pro Shop. I am hooked and found it to be more then fun. So here is the question or problem. I don’t want to be sold a ton of things I don’t really need, and I want quality without going broke. So what would recommend (basics) for a new fly fishing angler with a budget of $300 to $500? Looking for a one size fits all category if possible. I would be fishing in the shallows of Florida’s Mosquito Lagoon and the Keys.

Saturday, December 5th, 2009Wikipedia describes it as…
In fly fishing, fish are caught by using artificial flies that are cast with a fly rod and a fly line. The fly line (today, almost always coated with plastic) is heavy enough in order to send the fly to the target. This is one of the main differences between spinner and bait rods, which use heavy weight on the line to cast lures, bait, etc. Artificial flies can vary dramatically in all morphological characteristics (size, weight, colour, etc.).
Artificial flies are created by tying hair, fur, feathers, or other materials, both natural and synthetic, onto a hook with thread. The first flies were tied with natural materials, but synthetic materials are now very popular and prevalent. The flies are tied in sizes, colours and patterns to match local terrestrial and aquatic insects, baitfish, or other prey attractive to the target fish species.
Sounds good to me.
Yes, synthetic materials are the norm now, and are in many cases a great advancement in angling and fly tying, both from a price and a usability point. However, i am wondering where you draw the line in regard to using synthetic materials and then labeling the finished products as ‘flies’.

What constitutes as a lure and what constitutes as a fly? What would you deem this monstrosity as? Fly or Lure?
And most importantly, would you fish it?

Fly fishing lures on a rod and reel?
Friday, November 6th, 2009WV fly fisherman checking in.
Sunday, October 11th, 2009Hello:
My Name is Edger and just joined the site and thought I would check in and say a bit about my resent fishing trip. I spent a week at Blackwater Falls, Pendelton Lake, and the Blackwater River and used both fly rod, reel, and bait, and an open reel. It was a great early fall week, but was only able to hook 1 trout on my fly reel in 3 days of fishing. I am looking for an area to fish in WV that has some nice size bass in it. I really would prefer a good lake to go before it gets too cold. I have also fished Cedar Lakes in Fairplains, WV and reeled in a couple, but nothing to brag about for sure. I like to fish from shore and was looking for another in my area to go get after some late fall fishing. I know this is a site for meeting the ladies, but I’m just looking to fish with someone. You know a fishing bud?
Thanks
Edger
