How far to let your line sink?

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010
Thought I’d join and ask a simple question when fishing for largemouth bass, trout, catfish. How many feet do you let the fishing hook go down in the water? If the waters about 15 feet deep and what colors are fish attracted to how to lure them in by the hook? Is it possible catch fish by letting the line just float at the top? Yes, a newbie fishing  question ;-)

Thanks, -Jeff

Large pond Bass fishing advice

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010
Hey all new to the site and had a question for you pond/small lake owners or regular fishers. I live on a 2 – 3 acre lake that is shaped like a “P” in North Texas. Let me describe the pond. It is shallow and a little more then 3 feet around the edges and 6-15 in the deepest part of the lake. The water clarity is low with plenty of algae, so about 2 feet visibility at best. The bottom is dark, blackish leaves that coat all of the bottom. There is zero vegitation that I know of in the water. But there are loads of sunfish, some crappie, an shad, and lots of 5-10lbs catfish. I know there are largemouth bass in the water because I caught one on a small rubber shad. I have also been told be several neighbors that they have seen or caught some bigger 3-5lb bass in the past.

Now with this information, as the water warms, what lure should I be using? I have tried several different color jigs (red, blue/black, white, silver) without success. I have tried shallow running crank baits and some rattle trap lures without success.  Any advice would sure be appreciated.- Thanks Mike

Largemouth bass fishing at Night

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010
I thought i’d ask a question about Largemouth bass fishing at night. Of course, we’ve all heard of fishing at night for crappie, pike, muskie, catfish, and even walleye fishing, but never bass fishing. In the past I have caught a few smallies at night accidentally while walleye fishing. So back to the question,- do largemouth, in warm water, mid summer, jigging tubes, soft plastic, or leeches work  best after dark? I live in Wisconsin and most water temps are in the 60′ s or lower is it worth it anymore this year. Also, when I go muskie fishing at night I was thinking about bring a bass rod with to get some action if the muskie fishing ain’t working. What do you think? is it possible? – Jeff

I just moved close to the Columbia river and there is a very small population of largemouths in the Columbia and I have never caught one, although I have tried numerous times. Can any of you experienced Oregon bass anglers give me some tips/pointers on how to catch some and in Oregon it is illegal to use live bait and goldfish.

Easy largemouth bass flies

Friday, May 14th, 2010
Hey all bass anglers I need some easy easy largemouth bass flies and I have already bought a begginers bass fly-tying kit but it doesnt have any reccomendations. So, if you could please what are some easily tied flies or ones that work very well with bass on a 22 acre pond. The lake were I’ll be fishing is ten years old but most of the bass are 5-8 pounds. Also, please include links to bass fly tying charts if you know any good ones!

New Rod and Reel without spending an arm

Bassfishing rod reel
Spending an arm and a leg for something higher quality, seams to be the norm these days. I am looking not to spend more than $100 for a rod/reel combo. If it makes a difference, I do a lot of largemouth bass fishing, but I’m looking to get into some winter trout fishing as well. I would like the rod to be light and durable and able to handle catching Lake Trout as well as smaller trout and bass. Any rod and reel suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Gear for catfish, bluegill, crappie and largemouth bass?

Thursday, November 19th, 2009
Hi all I just got an RV and things are a bit tight storage wise and I will be traveling the US off and on during my retirement.  I’ve not fished for a long time so I don’t have any gear and looking to buy some. I will be mostly fishing lakes and rivers and maybe some shore fishing. I just don’t know where to start or what to buy before I head out for some light fishing in many different States.

The best rod/reel for bassfishing?

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009
Here we go again! The biggest debate on the internet about bassfishing. I’m not too fond of baitcasters and  looking into or thinking about getting a  spinning reel. I usually catch 2-3 Lb. largemouth bass, but there is possibility of catching substantially larger fish. I would like something strong enough to catch a larger fish if it comes my way, but with enough finesse to make smaller catches fun. I use a lot of spinners and buzzbaits. Any Suggestions?
Justin
