Cleaning your rod and reel
Best method for cleaning your fishing  gear ie, rods and reels? Thought i’d check in and ask for the best methods and material that you all would use to clean your fishing rods, reels, and gear? I’m am probably like many anglers that usually use wd40 and it seems to work well but there must be a better solution for cleaning them?
Suggestions/advice?

Surf fishing for Skates and Rays

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

I like to shore/surf fish for corbina. My next quest is trying to catch rays, skates and possibly a guitarfish. I have done well this early Spring and caught all three off the jettys in the harbor and (Ventura) my biggest guitarfish was just under 5 feet long (4′10″) and weighing somewhere along the lines of 70 or 80 pounds. I released it and regret doing it, but I can’t kill a shark. So now I am all pumped up and want to know how  I go about surf fishing for them? I want that 5 footer again!

Any particular tackle, bait or lures? Specific rods and reels?- Serge

Crappie fishing

Over the years I have bought, collected, acquired, inherited a very large variety of rods and reels, but like any “good” angler fisherman, I’m always on the look out for next addition to my collection. I’m just wondering what reels the fishing men and women prefer the most and why? My favorite so far is a fish spinning setups, but I have a number of both baitcasters and spinning reels. Now I like to fish for crappie and  know where the crappie are, but the trick is to catch them. I am fishing a river, only about 50 feet wide, but very deep (20 feet in the channel) with steep banks. There are dozens of fallen trees, perfect cover for the crappie. Everything we learned about fishing for them in the lake is no longer valid. Basically, you have to anchor the boat at the end of a fallen tree, and use a long rod to drop bait in between the branches. (Lots of lost jigs).

Anyway, what is your favorite Rod/reel and what will you be fishing for?

Where to begin with fly fishing?

Friday, January 8th, 2010

I really want to get into fly fishing and only spin fished and never really gotten into casting flies. I have zero knowledge and gear and no idea where to start. Should I  attend a beginner’s class at my local Orvis outfitter’s store and I expect them to tell me a ton. I just can’t wait for the class in a week. Anyway, any and all info welcome! I need some lists of rods and reels, line, and any other gear I should know about! Thanks!

Rod and Reel for Striped Bass in Texas?

Monday, September 21st, 2009

I thought I’d also join the rush for gear and tackle questions and get some fall striper fishing in. I’ll be going fishing for striped bass/hybrids soon and I don’t think that my rods are enough for them. What kind of rods and reels to you use for stipers? I have a quantum baitcasting combo and a couple spinning reels. I also have some saltwater gear that my grandfather left me. I don’t want to break a rod. Any help you could offer would be appreciated.
