Hey members new here and thought I’d post a question about a surf fishing rig. I don’t get out as much as I use to and possibly a few times a year a best. My best choice (local) to buy gear is either Sports Authority or Walmart. I have purchased a few Ugly Stiks for freshwater past from there and been very happy so far. So now I want to buy a surf fishing rig and was wondering what size rig/ combo would you can recommend? I will be fishing from the NC shoreline in October. If you could also give me some info on what type of rig and bait to you, that would be excellent. First time ever surf fishing. I am accustomed to spinning reels. Interested in catching Blue fish/stripers/weakfish.
Tight lines,
Gary

Any members here from California? I grew up (30 years) surf fishing in Florida. I’ve been Surf /shore/ Fishing Southern California now this past year when I moved here. Not knowing the area or fishing techniques I’ve been fishing the same as if I was in Florida. I’ve been fishing my surf rod with drop shot rig and found a open section of beach used shrimp. Nothing! ..not even a bite and it’s well past the frustrated point. So if there are any Southern Cali surf anglers want to give me some advice, like the right type of bait to use and were to cast my rod for California beaches.
Thanks,
Jerry

Hello all! I need some tips surf fishing rod/reel setup? I am heading down to Baja (Cortez side) with friends and I don’t want to spend much money on a fishing gear set up. My trip is just to be able to fish while I am chilling on the beach. Also what kind of bait would you use in Baja during the summer months? Plus what time of day is the best to fish?
Thanks
Jason

Hi guys/gals. It looks like I’ll be heading out on Sunday to do a little surf fishing on Padre Island Texas. I’ll be leaving with friends and we got our surf rods, licenses, beer, and all the tackle minus hooks and weights. Any bait recommendations for this time of year and are most beaches shore fishing friendly?

Hello all! Got a question for your Surf/Shore fishermen. I started to fish the coast and my line get torn up on the rocks and tangled a lot due to the sand constant sand friction. So if you could I am looking for some advice on the type or brand name of line to use on my reel that won’t snag, tangle, or break easily and one I can make good leader lines out of?
Regards,
TexasFishnman!

Newbie fishing rod question. Yes, another new fisherman here and I did hit the search function first!

Anyways, does it really matter what rod you use because I went to buy a new rod the other day and the salesman mentioned that the rod I was holding was offshore fishing. So it got me wondering that most sites that sell fishing equipment rarely explain in detail the function, purpose, or use of the products they sell. As for me at least it’s much cheaper to buy online then to drive 40 miles to the closest sporting good store.
Anyway, I was looking for shore fishing equipment to use also for fishing piers and to surf fishing off the beach.
Thanks -Todd

Hey all! Had a quick question. I got a Shakespeare Wonder Rod, but it has a few more labels on it that I don’t know about. My son, recently got this rod at an estate sale as a fathers day gift. I’ve been trying some surf fishing as opposed to pier fishing, and I didn’t want to invest a lot of money for something I was not sure about. Anyways, the rod has the Shakespeare Wonder Rod label, then an Omni Action label (as far as i can tell, it is a little scratched) and then a Carboloy label. What does this mean?

My fishing bud went out and bought a $900 fishing rod. Fishermen always say how a good rod is very important, but in my opinion it has little importance. Of course you need a good enough rod to get the fish on the beach, but a rod won’t make the fish bite.
Is there something i’m missing here about how the rod is important? I fish with a 25 dollar Walmart rod… it works the same as any other rod.
Your thoughts?
Its was a 300 st croix rod, and a 600 reel,
Danny

Hello all, thought i’d join and then ask a question about freshwater fishing. I’ve been a saltwater angler for 25 years and want to start freshwater fishing. My question is instead of going out and buying new gear will surf fishing rods, reels, and lures work for freshwater fishing? If not, what kind of equipment will I need to get for perch, walleye, trout, bass, crappie, catfish, etc. – Thanks Al in Georgia.
