New Rod and Reel without spending an arm

Bassfishing rod reel
Spending an arm and a leg for something higher quality, seams to be the norm these days. I am looking not to spend more than $100 for a rod/reel combo. If it makes a difference, I do a lot of largemouth bass fishing, but I’m looking to get into some winter trout fishing as well. I would like the rod to be light and durable and able to handle catching Lake Trout as well as smaller trout and bass. Any rod and reel suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Non Fly method for trout fishing

Monday, December 14th, 2009
Some of my none Fly Fishing friends want me to take them out fishing, and they dont have enough time to learn. Do you think they will be able to attract trout with a zebco? Is it kind of like being a skier hanging out with snowboarders?

Trout fishing in coldwater

Friday, December 4th, 2009
It’s December now and I’m trying to pull out some brown trout up here (the water’s pretty cold) in upstate New York. I’ve been using some curly tails and I’ve gotten some weak strikes, though I haven’t set a hook. Anybody still catching brown trout? What are you using? I’m fishing a pretty small creek with a moderate flow.

How’s the Fly Fishing in Germany?

Saturday, October 24th, 2009
I will be deployed in  Germany for the next three years,  starting in late October. I am an avid fly angler and wanted to know of any good fly fishing areas in Southern  Germany. I was hoping to find a good fly fishing location somewhere fairly close by that has easy river access. I will also be traveling around Europe a little so if you have any suggestions for locations outside of Germany, I’d like to hear them.

Fall Arkansas river fishing trip

Friday, October 16th, 2009

I’ll be going on a float/fishing trip this Saturday for some late fall river fishing trip in Northwest Arkansas. Would/could someone kindly  suggest a few good bait/lures/flies to try? Possibly Trout, small mouth bass, and maybe some bluegill are what we are going after.

Fly fishing CA in September?

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

I am a late starter to fly-fishing, trying to find a good spot in Northern CA.  Also, I started a website/blog of my own with ratings and advice for bass fishing and soon to be how to fly fish and equipment, especially what fly patterns and rivers are best. I am also looking for information hatch for all rivers in California? Plus recommendations and reviews on getaway in Central/North California for trout fishing rivers, like Guides, Bait stores, campsites, cabins, B&B, and motels. Need advice on: which river spot, when and on what flies, and what will be hatching this month? I know, I am asking a lot.

Bears and Fly fishing safety

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

I know I have prevented some serious situations when out in the field due to looking over my shoulder constintly. In my part of the world, Grizzlies and Moose are what you don’t want to run into on the river. If you do, you need to know how to handle them – especially if things go very wrong.  I would like  to know what kind of predators or dangerous animals are in your parts of the woods, and what measures do you take to ensure safety for yourself and others when on the water? Have you had a close call? And, if so, how did you prevent it?

Things I’ve seen anglers do in the field:

1. Bears are drawn to the rivers by fishermen’s leftovers.
2. Anglers and bears meet. Angers flee, leaving stringers of fresh fish behind.
3. Bears dine on fresh sushi and make a mental note to return soon.

What’s your favorite trout fishing bait?

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

Pretty simple question for fishermen/women out there, what’s been getting the most trout lately? Don’t get me wrong, I know this question will probably get me absolutely nowhere in my future days of fishing this year, but I just want some insight.

I was out fishing for almost eight hours today at a local lake. Pulled in a total of sixteen fish. Twelve that were trout, but only kept five of ‘em. I used night crawlers and sometimes green colored Powerbait.

Any tips would be great, I just don’t want another day like today.

Thanks.
